TWO WAYS TO BECOME SELF-SUFFICIENT IN ENERGY
The government has announced two initiatives to encourage people to go green. By combining them you could cut your energy bills by at least two-thirds, and maybe much more.
1. Generate your own electricity, using photo-voltaic panels.
The government is paying an attractive rate through its Feed-In Tariff initiative, index-linked and tax-free, for every kilowatt hour you generate, for the next 25 years.
Put 16 panels on your roof – likely cost around £12,000 – and you’ll get back between £1500 to £2,000 a year at current rates.That will more than pay for the average house’s power use, and represents a better return than any other form of investment.
2. Generate heat/hot water from renewables.
Install heat pumps, thermal solar panels or biomass to generate hot water for central heating and general domestic use, and you’ll get an initial grant of around £1,000, and from October 2012, an annual payment, based on a formula to be confirmed, under the Renewable Heat Incentive.
Based on initial projections, 3-5 bedroom houses could qualify for between £1-2,000 a year, depending on the scale and extent of the installation – also tax-free and index-linked for up to 20 years.
