biomass
Biomass is a sustainable fuel that can offer a wide range of uses and benefits:
- Biomass is a low carbon renewable energy fuel producing a fraction of the Carbon emissions of fossil fuels
- Biomass can be sourced locally, locally sourced biomass can offer local business opportunities and support the rural economy
- Local production and usage, allows financial and environmental costs of transport to be minimized
- The use of biomass fuel provides an economic incentive to manage woodland which improves biodiversity.
- Many biomass fuels generate lower levels of such atmospheric pollutants
- Modern biomass combustion systems offer combustion efficiency and emission levels comparable with the best fossil fuel boilers
There are many types of energy crops, short rotation energy crops, grasses and non-woody energy crops, agricultural energy crops and aquatics.
Biomass boilers are exceptionally economical. A 40kW boiler typically uses a similar amount of wood as a conventional log stove but at 92% efficiency it provides infinitely more heat via your accumulator tank. To maintain ample hot water during the summer months, a boiler needs only to be lit every 3 to 4 days.
